SLOWING DOWN FASHION
In a world where trends run on a constant cycle, forever rotating out of style, fast-fashion has been able to take over the industry. The fast fashion model involves rapid design, production and distribution, allowing retailers to provide large quantities of various products at low and affordable price points to maximise their profit on current trends. However, these cheap and fashionable pieces of clothing that are subsequently produced come at a higher price than you might have realised.
Fast fashion is exacerbating an already detrimental issue and is leading us towards an environmental disaster. Various studies have estimated that pieces of clothing are only worn approximately ten times before they are disposed of which has subsequently resulted in 350, 000 tonnes of clothing being sent to landfill each year. Not only has fast-fashion lead to an abundance of waste, the industry contributes to 10 percent of global emissions annually and is the second largest consumer of water, estimated to use over 1.5 trillion litres every year.
This disregard of fast fashions detrimental impact on the planet is being combatted by an emerging reaction called slow fashion. Slow fashion brands and consumers pose the argument for hitting the brakes on excessive production, overcomplicated supply chains and mindless consumption and instead, advocates for manufacturing responsibly. With the well-being of the environment, people and animals, at the forefront of their conscience.
Here at Lounge-wear, we believe that fundamental changes are required to slow down the pace of fast-fashion and momentary trends need replacing with timeless, quality investment pieces that will never go out of style.
